Young Carers
Dear Parent/Carer
Do you think your child could be a Young Carer?
There are around 800,000 Young Carers in the UK. Many young people don’t even realise that they are a Young Carer. As a school, if we are truly to fulfil our ambition that no child is left behind, we need your help to ensure we know every Young Carer from years 7 to 13. Knowing this information will help to provide the right support to ensure all our Young Careers succeed both academically and socially.
Do you think your child could be a Young Carer?
By definition, a Young Carer is someone under 18 who is caring for a family member because they are elderly, have long term illness, mental ill health, physical or learning disabilities, or face challenges with addiction. The care they give maybe physical and/or emotional. The adult they help may be a parent, grandparent, sibling or other family member.
Young Carers may engage in:
- Practical tasks (cooking, housework and shopping)
- Physical care (lifting or helping someone use the stairs)
- Personal care (dressing, washing, helping with toilet needs)
- Managing the family budget (bills and prescriptions)
- Managing and giving medication
- Looking after younger brothers and/or sisters
- Helping someone communicate
