Beckfoot Trust is an organisation that links a group of local Bradford schools together so that they can collectively improve the life chances for young people within their schools. Our aim is to create a group of truly remarkable schools each with a genuine comprehensive intake. They will be wonderful places for young people to learn and grow up in. We want to make a difference. We want to create something special.

LRC (Learning Resource Centre)

The library has an extensive collection of books, magazines, newspapers, DVDs, a computer suite and laptops. It is accessible to students before and after school and during break and lunch time. The library staff encourage students to be independent learners by helping them to develop the skills to access resources efficiently and effectively. You may contact the library staff for advice and guidance on library resources to complete extended learning tasks.

Literacy at home - how you can help

The simplest and easiest way you can help promote your child’s literacy skills at home is by actively encouraging or taking part in reading with them. This can be:

  • Fiction (novels, comics, etc.)
  • Non- Fiction (newspapers, magazines, websites, blogs, etc.)

Students who regularly read make the most progress in their Literacy and this has a positive effect on their achievement in all subjects of the curriculum.

Questions to ask your child about a text they are reading;

  • Can you summarise what’s happened on this page?
  • Why did the character do that?
  • What is the writer trying to say?

Accelerated Reader™ for Key Stage 3

Students in Year 7, Year 8 and lower sets in Year 9 are enrolled in the Accelerated Reader™ (AR) scheme. This involves students’ reading books pitched at their individual reading level (ZPD) that they have chosen to read. After completing the book they then carry out an online quiz based on what they have read.

How much time should they be reading?

As a minimum, your child should be reading for at least 20 minutes as day.  However real progress in their reading skills can be achieved if they are reading for 35 minutes or over a day.  Monitoring the amount of time your child is reading will significantly help boost their literacy skills.

How can I check my child’s progress?

Log onto Accelerated Reader™ using the details in your child’s planner and view the ‘Bookshelf’ which lists all quizzes taken by your child and their score. You can also click on ‘Progress’ and see how far along your child is towards their individual points target and a summary of their reading so far.

How is reading celebrated?

All students who achieve their target will receive a certificate and a text home. The top 10 readers in each year group will be displayed on the LRC noticeboard. The top tutor group (those with the greatest number of students who meet their targets) will also be displayed and will receive a trophy to keep in their tutor room until the next half term.

Care of Books

Your child’s reading book is part of the equipment needed for school each day and should be in their bag at all times.  If your child loses or damages their library book, you will be asked to pay for the cost of a new copy.
