Beckfoot Trust is an organisation that links a group of local Bradford schools together so that they can collectively improve the life chances for young people within their schools. Our aim is to create a group of truly remarkable schools each with a genuine comprehensive intake. They will be wonderful places for young people to learn and grow up in. We want to make a difference. We want to create something special.

Beckfoot RE students will learn from and about religions and worldviews in their local, national and global communities. The purpose of RE is to develop the spiritual and moral identity of a child through talk, debate and study of religious beliefs and practices. Students will be equipped with systematic knowledge of a range of religions, worldviews , ethical dilemmas and philosophies, and they will be encouraged to reflect, critique and compare this knowledge to their own values and identities. Pupils will gain in depth knowledge of sources of wisdom and develop skills in analysis, evaluation, explanation and comparison through this.

Our current RE A Level students tell us what the best thing they have studied so far is:

Why should I choose an RE A Level?

Can I use an RE A Level in the future?

Religious Studies FAQs

1. Does Beckfoot offer a Philosophy A Level?

We do! Philosophy makes up a third of the A Level in Religious Studies and it is taught by Miss Towler. You will study RE A Level, and this will include units in Philosophy, Ethics and Christian Thought.

2. Do I need to have done GCSE RE?

No, you don’t. The content that is covered in RE GCSE is completely different to what you learn about at A Level. You need skills of evaluation and literacy, but you can demonstrate these skills with a good grade in English.

3. Is it really hard?

RE A Level is challenging because the course covers some of the biggest questions of life, for example: ‘how do we know what is true?’ ‘what’s the right thing to do?’ and ‘can a loving God send people to Hell?’. The content is rewarding because it makes you think… a lot!

4. How will I be assessed?

OCR require students to write evaluative essays and give 40 marks per essay. You will do three exams at the end of year 13: one on Philosophy, Ethics, and Christian Thought. In each exam you will write three essays and you will have two hours to do all three.
