Road Safety
Dear Parent/Carer
Road Safety
I am writing to you following a serious incident at the crossing on Bradford Road just outside school after 3.30pm last night. Two of our students were hit by a van whilst attempting to cross the road at the crossing and are, thankfully, doing ok today following assessment and treatment in hospital. We also had a report after 5pm of a near miss in Bingley that may well have been our students and I wanted to seek your support in speaking to your child about road safety.
In response to this, and to ensure the safety of our students, I have asked tutors to speak with students today about the events of last night and the need for us all to be more careful and vigilant when crossing any road but especially one as busy as Bradford Road. I want to remind them that they are precious to you and to us. Their safety matters and indeed little else is of importance if that is not right.
Road safety is an important part of our personal development programme and we have pulled this part of our provision forward to early in January to remind students, once again, of the need to be more aware. This will take the form of an assembly in school. In addition, we will have an increased presence on Bradford Road to support students using the crossing safely. Ultimately, students must take responsibility for their own safety and be incredibly careful especially in the winter when the evenings are short, it is dark, and students are often difficult to see.
As I am sure you will agree the prospect of any one of our students being hurt (or worse) due to failure to follow simple road safety rules is not one I wish to consider more fully. It is for that reason that I ask that you reinforce this message at home. All that is required is for every young person to be sensible, aware of the traffic, and cross all roads safely whilst obeying traffic and crossing signals.
Many thanks as always for your support.
Kind regards
Simon Wade
