Culture's Week - April 2025
Cultures' Week (2nd – 4th April)
This week we extend 'Cultures' Day' into 'Cultures' Week'.
This comes after the hard work of a group of students who led a campaign to make this happen.
We will highlight cultural diversity through the curriculum, run quizzes and assemblies through which you will have the opportunity to explore your own cultural identity, find out about the cultural beliefs of people in your class and within the local Bradford community.
On Friday, all students will be invited to come into school wearing clothes that help you express yourself and your culture.
What is 'culture'?
Noun:
(a) the customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group.
(b) the set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterizes an institution or organization.
How does the first definition apply to our school?
(a) the customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group.
At Beckfoot our students represent a multitude of different racial, religious or social groups. Think about your own form. There will be students of different races and religions, different genders, sexual orientation, different abilities, students who are bilingual, bicultural, multicultural.
Take a moment to think about what your own 'culture' is.
Cultural identity is important as it is what gets passed down from one generation to the next, helping to keep history and traditions alive. Cultural heritage connects people to their past, giving them a sense of belonging and binding them together in the present.
Therefore, it is important that we recognise, understand and celebrate our cultural differences. This is what Cultures' Week is all about.
How does the second definition apply to our school?
(b) the set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterizes an institution or organization
Beckfoot, like wider British society, values cultural diversity. It is part of our school culture to respect each other no matter what faith, race, age, gender or sexual orientation an individual may hold. Through acknowledging and understanding cultural differences, we grow as a collective.
We are proud of this. So proud, in fact, that a couple of years ago two students worked together to bring the first 'Cultures' Day' to Beckfoot Sixth form.
A sense of belonging
We want all students to feel their belong here.
Last week, students have thought of a time when they felt happy or proud to be a part of something here at school. They also finished the sentence: 'To me, Beckfoot makes me feel ..'. We have collated student words that will be turned into a school mural to help us celebrate Cultures' Week!
