Together We Celebrate Culture, Talent, and Community

As we near the end of another school year, it is hard to believe just how much has been packed into the past 12 months. The final weeks of term always bring a mixture of celebration, reflection and anticipation, and this year has been no exception.

Looking back, there is so much to be proud of. Our students have embraced every opportunity made available to them with enthusiasm, resilience, and curiosity. Whether in the classroom, on the sports field, on stage, through music, art, community projects, or educational visits, they always impress with their determination to learn, grow, and support one another.

A Celebration of Culture

Today is Cultures Day, an annual event started a few years ago by Naffi, a year 11 student who felt strongly that we should celebrate diversity at Beckfoot and, in doing so, enable all our community to feel proud of who they are and where they come from. It is always a joyful reminder of the rich diversity that makes our school such a vibrant and welcoming place. From colourful traditional dress and music to dance, food and stories, our pupils will proudly share the cultures, languages and traditions that make each of us unique.

Our diversity is one of our greatest strengths. By celebrating our different backgrounds and experiences, we deepen our understanding of one another and strengthen the sense of belonging that makes our school community so special. This morning, I could not choose between two things that are so important to me. The first is Ireland, my home and the second is Liverpool FC. Last year I wore an Irish rugby shirt and so today I am going back to the 70s in a retro Liverpool shirt that reminds me so much of my youth. I am really excited about the day ahead and I know our students are too.

The past couple of weeks have also been about celebrating talent.

Last week, we were delighted to host our annual Sports Awards Evening—always one of the highlights of the school calendar. The evening opened with an inspiring video featuring both our staff and students, accompanied by Berton Braley’s poem Opportunity. It was a powerful way to begin a celebration of commitment, perseverance, and achievement, reminding us that success is built through determination, resilience, and the courage to embrace every opportunity. Throughout the evening, we recognised not only outstanding commitment, achievement, and sporting success but also the teamwork, sportsmanship and dedication that define our sporting community. Congratulations to all our nominees, award winners and to every student who has represented the school with pride this year. A special congratulations to Lucy who won the Head of PE award and to Ella who is this year’s Sports Personality of the Year. Both are incredible young people who have given so much to Beckfoot over the years.

I want to thank the PE team and their wonderful team of coaches, student helpers and everyone who contributes so much to making sport such a special part of our community. They have created a culture where sport is important and something to be celebrated and be proud of. They have the most special relationships with so many of our students and are developing a love of sport and physical activity in our young people that, we hope, will be with them for life.

Summer Serenade

Last night, we rounded off the school year with an incredible Summer Serenade Concert that showcased the remarkable talent, dedication, and creativity of our students. From the opening performance to the final applause, the evening was filled with outstanding musical performances and joy. It was wonderful to see so many students sharing their gifts and performing with such passion, supported by families, friends, and staff. Indeed, I felt last night that the future of music at Beckfoot is secure for many more years because of the sheer numbers involved and the diversity of talent. That, combined with the efforts of Mr Lee, Mr Stimpson, Mr Ratahi, and the incredible Peri team, means that music will continue to thrive and enrich the lives of our students, families, and wider community for years to come. My sincere thanks go to our talented performers, our dedicated music team and everyone who worked behind the scenes to make the concert such a memorable celebration. It was a fitting finale to a fantastic year and a wonderful reminder of the power of music to bring everyone in our school together.

Model UN

Last week, our new to Year 13 students demonstrated exceptional maturity and intellectual curiosity as they took part in a thought-provoking debate through our Model UN programme. Focusing on the complex conflict in the Middle East, including the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, students represented different nations, researched a range of perspectives, and engaged in respectful, informed discussion. It was impressive to see them developing their critical thinking, diplomacy, public speaking, and negotiation skills while tackling one of the world’s most challenging contemporary issues. Experiences such as these prepare our students not only for further study but also for active, informed participation in an increasingly interconnected world. I continue to be so grateful to Mrs Ashraf and Mr Hafiz who led this programme and provide such incredible opportunities for Beckfoot students to be involved in such an initiative.

Thank you to our staff, students, and families

Next week is Enrichment Week and from Sunday onwards, our community will engage in over 20 different activities and work experience. It is a mammoth operation and an incredibly special part of our school for almost 30 years now. I hope everyone has a great week and I look forward to hearing all about the various escapades in the days ahead. I am indebted to Mrs Wintersgill, Mrs Mullaney and all the trip leaders and staff who will work hard to ensure it is another special week for all.

I would also like to thank our parents, carers and families for the support, encouragement, and partnership you have shown throughout the year. The strong relationships between home and school play such an important role in helping our children succeed, and we truly value everything you do.

For now, I hope the summer break offers everyone the chance to rest, recharge and spend quality time with family and friends. Whether your plans include travelling, exploring somewhere new, enjoying time outdoors or simply slowing down and relaxing, I hope the weeks ahead are filled with happiness, laughter, and lasting memories.

Thank you for making this school year such a special one. Together, we have achieved so much, and I am excited about all that lies ahead.

Have a wonderful, safe, and restful summer.

Take care
