Beckfoot Trust is an organisation that links a group of local Bradford schools together so that they can collectively improve the life chances for young people within their schools. Our aim is to create a group of truly remarkable schools each with a genuine comprehensive intake. They will be wonderful places for young people to learn and grow up in. We want to make a difference. We want to create something special.

Year 8 RESPECT Wider Learning Day

Dear Parents/Carers,

On Tuesday 9 May 2023, we have organised a Wider learning day for our year 8 students. The theme of the day is RESPECT.

Students will take part in sessions focusing on:

  • Racism and hate crimes
  • Gender and sexuality
  • Sexual bullying/harassment
  • Cyber bullying/staying safe online

The sessions will cover content from the RSE curriculum. RSE stands for Relationships and Sex Education, which is a statutory content that aims to provide children and young people with the knowledge, skills, and understanding they need to form healthy and positive relationships, as well as making safe and informed choices about sex and sexuality.

Here are some key points about RSE in schools. The full RSE policy can be found on the website here.

  1. Legal requirement: RSE is a legal requirement for all schools in England, and it is compulsory for all students in primary and secondary education to receive RSE.
  2. Content: RSE covers a wide range of topics, including puberty, sexual health, consent, healthy relationships, gender identity, and sexual orientation. It also includes information on the legal and ethical aspects of sex and relationships.
  3. Parental involvement: Schools are required to consult with parents/carers when developing their RSE policy and to provide them with information about the content and delivery of RSE. Parents/carers also have the right to withdraw their child from certain aspects of RSE, although this is not recommended. Further information is contained in the full policy https://www.beckfoot.org/curriculum/rse/.
  4. Safeguarding: RSE is an important part of safeguarding in schools, as it provides children and young people with the knowledge and skills, they need to stay safe and make informed decisions about their sexual health and relationships.

In previous years students have thoroughly enjoyed the day and we know year 8 will also.

If you have any questions then please do not hesitate to get in contact.

Best Wishes

Laura Keller-Bradbury (Head of Year 8) and Mannaan Mehmood (Year 8 Pastoral Manager)
